Obesity in adults and children is a growing trend worldwide. It could even be said to be an epidemic. Although it is not infectious, the number of obese people is increasing at a worrying rate. This problem cannot be solved by the health service alone. Government, educators, consumers themselves and the food industry must also accept responsibility.
In reality, no food product is healthy or unhealthy. Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals - we need them all. However, we need them in the right proportions and the right quantities. In addition, factors such as physical exercise and lifestyle influence our bodies and minds.
Consumers often know too little about how much energy they need each day, and what to eat in order to obtain this energy in a responsible manner. It is important that we become aware of our eating habits.
The Dutch Sugar Foundation (Suikerstichting Nederland) carries out a lot of scientific research into the properties of sugar as a source of essential carbohydrates. Similarly, our colleagues in the various sectors of the food industry research other aspects of our food.
There is nothing to be gained by pointing an accusatory finger at each other’s products. Rather, we should join forces and pool our knowledge, research and information in the battle against increasing obesity.
Suikerstichting Nederland is willing to sit down with government, scientists, nutritionists, food producers and all other parties who are seriously concerned about the social problem of obesity.
