Suiker Unie will begin producing renewable gas during this beet campaign using two methane reactors, in Dinteloord and Vierverlaten.
Energy producer Essent will buy green gas certificates from Suiker Unie for a period of five years. For both companies it is the first time they will make use of the trading platform operated by Vertogas, the new certifying body for green gas.
Essent, market leader in green gas, has advised Suiker Unie concerning the administration associated with the production of gas and obtaining green gas certificates. Albert Markusse, general manager of Suiker Unie: ‘We are very pleased about the collaboration with Essent. They established the monitoring protocol and assisted us during the approval of the installations by Vertogas.’
By employing its own gas for the production process, Suiker Unie can reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. ‘A sustainable approach,’ according to Jacob Ruiter, Director Large Accounts at Essent. ‘In this manner Suiker Unie contributes to a qualitatively strong certification system for green gas.’
How does Vertogas work?
Through Vertogas, producers can obtain certification of their sustainably produced gas and then sell the certificates. The certificates are a guarantee that the delivered gas is of renewable source.
What is the monitoring protocol?
The monitoring protocol has been developed to organise the administration of biogas products for trade in certificates. The protocol establishes specifications for the administration and data communication associated with biogas production and guarantees the biogas quality and volumes.
